Untitled is a durational performance presented over two days at the Carlton Club Exhibition Spaces, where audiences are invited to enter, leave, and return as the work continues. The piece engages with the week’s top 50 pop songs as a way of tracing how popular music registers the cultural mood of a particular moment. Rather than listening to the the songs, I use their titles s choreographic scores and the track lengths as temporal structures, approaching pop culture as something encountered from the outside.
Each cycle began with the handwritten transcription of a song title onto an A4 sheet of paper. These pages were placed one atop another as the performance progressed, forming a growing stack that quietly accumulated at the work’s centre. The pile of papers acted as a material record of time passing; an archive of improvised responses to a rapidly shifting cultural landscape, and a trace of the body’s encounter with the language of the mainstream.
